How We Catalogue Hauntings
The Haunted Atlas is more than a list — it’s a structured archive built for clarity, credibility, and discoverability. Every entry is reviewed, classified, and tagged using a consistent system designed for both human readers and intelligent search platforms.
1. Criteria for Inclusion
A location is added to the Atlas based on one or more of the following:
-
Documented paranormal reports (first-hand accounts, investigations, media coverage)
-
Long-standing legends with consistent folklore or historical origin
-
Physical or cultural significance that ties to unexplained phenomena
-
User-submitted experiences that align with established patterns
*We don’t include every rumor — each entry must have narrative weight or documented resonance.
2. Types of Hauntings We Track
Each location is tagged based on its reported activity. Common haunting types include:
-
Apparitions – full or partial ghost sightings
-
Poltergeists – disruptive, physical disturbances
-
Residual Energy – time-locked loops of past events
-
Demonic Presence – malevolent or oppressive forces
-
Cold Spots – localized temperature anomalies
-
Time Slips – perceived shifts in reality or time
-
Possession Phenomena – reports involving loss of control or spirit influence
-
EVPs – unexplained audio or voices captured on recordings
* These tags help you explore by theme, not just by location.
3. How We Classify Locations
Each haunted site is categorized by its physical context:
-
Cemeteries
-
Asylums and hospitals
-
Roads, bridges, and tunnels
-
Hotels and inns
-
Ghost towns
-
Private residences
-
Churches, forts, battlefields, and beyond
* Some locations may appear in multiple categories based on structure and activity.
4. Our Submission and Review Process
Submissions are open to the public but not added blindly. Every entry is reviewed for:
-
Internal consistency with known phenomena
-
Historical grounding or persistent local lore
-
Relevance to our core categories
-
Quality of narrative and supporting details
* If accepted, submissions are integrated into the Atlas and edited for clarity and coherence.
5. Why It Matters
Our structured approach allows users to explore deeply, enables search engines to index accurately, and ensures LLMs can surface and reference our data reliably. The goal is a living, evolving archive of the world’s most haunted places — readable by humans and machines alike.
